What is XLRS?
X-Linked Juvenile Retinoschisis (XLRS) is a rare genetic eye condition that affects the retina, the part of the eye that senses light and sends images to the brain. It's caused by a mutation on the X chromosome, which is why it almost exclusively affects boys and men. Girls and women can carry the gene without showing symptoms, but sons who inherit it are affected from birth or early childhood.
XLRS causes the layers of the retina to split apart ("schisis" means splitting), which leads to progressive vision loss over time. Severity varies widely — some people retain functional vision for decades, while others experience more significant loss earlier in life.
How common is it?
XLRS is considered a rare disease, affecting roughly 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 25,000 males worldwide, depending on the population studied. Because it's rare and not widely known, many families spend months or years pursuing a diagnosis before they even have a name for what their child is experiencing.
What are the symptoms?
Common signs include:
- Reduced central vision, often noticed when a child struggles to see a blackboard or screen
- Difficulty with fine visual tasks
- In some cases, involuntary eye movement (nystagmus) in infancy
- Vision that doesn't correct fully with glasses
Symptoms usually appear in early childhood, which is why it's called "juvenile" retinoschisis.
Is there a cure?
Not yet. There's currently no cure for XLRS, though researchers are actively studying gene therapy approaches, and low-vision aids and monitoring can help manage the condition. That's the gap we started SEE 4 E to help close.
Why we're telling you this
Our son Ethan was born with XLRS. Like a lot of parents, we didn't know this disease existed until it became part of our lives. We started SEE 4 E because apparel is something everyone already buys — so why not make every hat, pin, and hoodie also fund the research that gets us closer to a cure?
